Majestic Training College launches new range of courses to help businesses avoid compliance pitfalls
Warning – you could be fined…make sure your staff are trained…
Every year, thousands of people suffer accidents and ill-health at work, most of which could be avoided.
Official figures from the HSE (Health and Safety Executive) reveal that last year 152 workers were killed at work and 1.3 million people suffered from an illness (long-standing as well as new cases) they believed was caused or made worse by their current or past work. Almost half of these were new conditions which started during the year.
A further 800,000 former workers were suffering from an illness which was caused or made worse by their past work and 121000 other injuries to employees were reported under RIDDOR.
More than 2200 people died from Mesothelioma in 2008 and thousands more from other occupational cancers and diseases such as COPD.
A staggering 28.5 million days are lost each year due to work-related ill health of which 5 million were due to workplace injury. Source: Annual Statistic Report Health and Safety Executive.
How does all this affect your business?
Apart from the distressed caused by workplace accidents and illness and the obvious loss of a staff members valuable contribution, business owners risk prosecution and civil actions for damages.
In 2009 1033 offences were prosecuted by HSE and ORR, 287 offences were prosecuted by local authorities and over 15,000 enforcement notices were issued by all enforcing authorities.
It is estimated that thousands of workers will suffer from back, neck, limb and stress related disorders in the workplace this year. In a separate study Doctors found that the most common type of work-related was musculoskeletal disorders, which could be caused by something as simple as lifting a box of stationery or moving a disable patient.
What can you do to avoid injuries and unnecessary risk to your staff?
Employers have a legal obligation to protect the health and safety of their employees and other people who might be affected by what they do. Two key areas are risk assessment and training.
You should be aware of potential risks, which means carrying out a proper risk assessment.
You can carry out a risk assessment yourself or employ a professional to do this for you as long as potential risks have been identified and document along with any action required.
Five steps to Risk Assessment
The HSE recommends the following five step approach to risk assessment:
looking for the hazards;
deciding who might be harmed and how;
evaluating the risks and deciding whether the existing precautions are adequate or whether more should be done;
recording your findings and telling your employees about them; and
reviewing your assessment and revising it if necessary
Employers and managers can learn how to prepare a risk assessment and prevent accidents at work by taking one of the many short courses available.
